Lamka: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has issued a notice and appeal urging all Kuki-Zo organisations and communities across India to organise candlelight vigils in honour of late Nengtinlhing Haokip, who succumbed to her injuries on January 11, 2026, following prolonged medical complications arising from violence in Manipur.
In a statement released by its Information and Publicity wing, the KZC expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Nengtinlhing Haokip, describing her death as a tragic reminder of the enduring human cost of the ongoing conflict in the state. According to the council, the young woman endured severe physical and psychological trauma during the early phase of the violence, which necessitated prolonged medical treatment. Despite what the council termed her “courageous struggle for life,” she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The council stated that the proposed candlelight vigil is intended as a collective expression of grief, remembrance, and solidarity, as well as a condemnation of acts of violence against civilians. It has appealed to Kuki-Zo organisations to hold the vigil in their respective cities and towns, ensuring widespread participation across the country.
The KZC further called upon every Kuki-Zo individual to take part in the solemn observance to pay tribute to the departed, stand in solidarity with all victims of violence, and reaffirm the community’s collective demand for justice, dignity, and protection. “Let this candlelight vigil serve as a symbol of remembrance, unity, and our unwavering resolve against injustice,” the statement said.
