Tengnoupal Villag
Kuki civil society organizations in Tengnoupal District have strongly opposed the proposed resettlement of the Meitei community in the region’s hill areas, citing concerns over security and historical grievances.
In a letter addressed to the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur on February 27, leaders from the Kuki Chiefs’ Association-Tengnoupal (KCA-TPL), Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal-Tengnoupal (KIT-TPL), and Kuki Students’ Organization-Tengnoupal (KSO-TPL) laid out their key concerns and demands for safeguarding the Kuki community.
Expressing gratitude to the Governor, the letter emphasized the need for a lasting peace agreement that upholds the rights and security of the Kuki people. Any attempts to resettle Meitei communities in the hill areas, warning of strong resistance if the policy were enforced, the statement added.
The letter also stressed the importance of protecting Kuki village volunteers, urging that no legal action be taken against them until a political resolution is achieved. The leaders cited past instances of violence and deep-seated mistrust between the communities.
The leaders further demanded the complete removal of Police Commandos from Tengnoupal District, arguing that “the continued police presence fuels insecurity rather than maintaining peace”, citing the previous incidents of confrontations between the Tengnoupal public and the police commandos.
