India’s Oscar Contender ‘Homebound’ Falls Short of Final Nominations

India’s official Oscar entry, Homebound, has not secured a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, had made the final 15-film shortlist—a rare achievement for Indian cinema—but did not make the final five.

The nominated films in the category are The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), Sentimental Value (Norway), Sirat (Spain), and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia). Homebound had premiered at Cannes and screened at major festivals including Toronto and Melbourne.

Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, and Apoorva Mehta, with Martin Scorsese among executive producers, the film was praised for its grounded storytelling and performances.

The full Oscar nominations also saw Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners leading with 16 nods, while Timothée Chalamet became the youngest actor with three Best Actor nominations. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, with Conan O’Brien hosting.
