The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka marked the 77th Republic Day with celebrations across all Indian diplomatic missions on the island. High Commissioner Santosh Jha unfurled the National Flag at India House in Colombo on Sunday morning.
Addressing the gathering, the High Commissioner read excerpts from the President of India’s address delivered on the eve of Republic Day. The celebrations were enriched by cultural performances presented by students of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and members of the Sri Lankan Navy.
Earlier in the day, the High Commissioner paid tribute to the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) by laying a wreath at the IPKF Memorial, honouring the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in Sri Lanka.
Republic Day was also celebrated at the Assistant High Commission of India in Kandy and at the Indian Consulates in Jaffna and Hambantota, where the tricolour was ceremonially unfurled.
Members of the Indian community participated in the celebrations with great patriotic enthusiasm. As part of the commemorative events, the Indian Mission organised a cultural programme on Friday, featuring a performance by renowned Bollywood playback singer Anuradha Paudwal, who enthralled audiences with timeless Bollywood melodies, setting the tone for the Republic Day celebrations.
