India and EU Close to Historic Trade Agreement, EU Commission President Says

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that India and the European Union (EU) are on the verge of finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), calling it “the mother of all agreements.” Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, she said she plans to visit India the weekend after the forum concludes.

Von der Leyen noted that while progress has been made, some work remains before the deal is finalized. She emphasized that the agreement would create a combined market of two billion people, representing nearly a quarter of global GDP. Highlighting Europe’s economic ambitions, she said the EU seeks to engage with today’s growth centers and tomorrow’s economic powerhouses, spanning regions from Latin America to the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

European Council President Antonio Costa and von der Leyen are scheduled to visit India from January 25 to 27. During the visit, they will be chief guests at the Republic Day celebrations and will jointly co-chair the India-EU Summit.
