The Kuki Alliance for Nampi Awakening Movement (KANAM) has issued a shocking statement asking the Indian Air Force to go ahead with bombing Kuki areas to expedite “Kuki genocide” if the Government of India really intent to, sparking off another debate over the government of India failed response to the crisis brewing in the state of Manipur.
The statement comes in the wake of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah directive of free movement of Meiteis into Kuki areas disregarding the concerns raised by Kuki bodies by 8 March. As a follow up of Shah’s directive, the state government took the initiative of sending buses to Kangpokpi today which the locals resisted. In the confrontation, one got killed and left dozens injured.
Citing similar instances of Nazi Germany, the statement alleges that Kuki men and women are subjected to the most cruel form of treatment under the close watch of a largest democracy. Denying those facts, the government asks us to accept peace without justice which is totally unacceptable, said KANAM.
KANAM in its painful note also advised that if aerial bombings were too cumbersome, the Indian government should “build gas chambers, like Hitler did in Germany, so we can voluntarily walk into them,” an expression of despair and dejection.
KANAM’s statement also pointed fingers towards the Meitei community, labeling its leadership as “fascist” and accusing them of displacing over 40,000 Kukis from their ancestral lands, burning churches, and destroying villages. The organization issued a defiant warning, declaring, “We shall never, ever let Fascist Meiteis roam freely in our lands. This is Kukiland, and we will sacrifice every drop of our blood to keep it free of Meitei fascists.”
The statement also noted that the present circumstances is not the first time the Government of India aggression towards our people. Our cities and people were bombed by the Indian Air Force in 1966. However each time we become stronger. We will stive for Justice until it’s delivered, the statement added.
It may be noted that the ethnic violence between Kukis and Meiteis have resulted in the death of hundreds and displacing tens of thousands since May 2023. The Kukis felt that the central leadership instead of solving the crisis by delivering justice deliberately shares similar narrative and policies with the dominant Meiteis in the state.
