In a strongly worded press statement issued today, the Hmar Inpui (Hmar Supreme House) condemned what it called a “politically motivated and misleading” attempt to drag the Hmar community into divisive ethnic politics.
The apex Hmar body was responding to a report published by India Today NE on June 23, which alleged the formation of a ghost organization called “Hmar Tlangval” that reportedly supported controversial demands made by the Meitei Alliance and Thadou Inpi Manipur.
According to the press release, the article claimed that the fictitious “Hmar Tiangval” group, allegedly floated by Meitei writer Naorem Mohen, endorsed the call to delist “Any Kuki Tribes” (AKT) from the Scheduled Tribes list. Hmar Inpui called the claim a “false flag operation” aimed at manufacturing fake tribal consensus and stoking communal division. Naorem Mohen, a known contributor to India Today NE, was identified as the individual behind the alleged fabrication.

Hmar Inpui urged the media outlet to take disciplinary action against him, citing gross journalistic misconduct. The organization also criticized the circulation of related WhatsApp messages by unknown handlers, warning that such disinformation was dangerous in a volatile environment.
“Hmar Inpui has never, and will never, endorse the agenda of any particular community at the expense of others,” the statement emphasized. It reiterated the Hmar people’s commitment to collective political aspirations while rejecting any attempt to misuse their name for propaganda or political gain.
The apex body cautioned that such campaigns threaten to polarize public opinion and fuel extremist sentiments at a time when communities are negotiating a shared political future. It called on those behind the disinformation campaign to stop exploiting the Hmar name and to cease spreading hatred and suspicion.
