Himanta Biswa Sarma voices support for Hindus in Bangladesh, calls on Centre to act against alleged atrocities

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 13 said that the people of Assam stand in solidarity with Hindus in Bangladesh and called upon the Government of India to take steps to stop alleged atrocities against the Hindu community there.

Addressing the media in Sribhumi town of the North Karimganj constituency, Sarma said Assam has consistently supported Hindus in Bangladesh and urged the Centre to ensure their safety and protection.

Responding to the Congress party’s protest over the renaming of Karimganj district as Sribhumi, the chief minister criticised the party, saying it takes time for them to grasp issues and that they would eventually understand the decision.

On the provincialisation of teachers, Sarma stated that portal-related work for venture school teachers has been completed. He added that qualified and eligible candidates would be given priority during the provincialisation process.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister distributed women entrepreneurship incentive cheques to 14,135 beneficiaries at the government school playground in Sribhumi town. The event was attended by ministers Krishnendu Paul and Kaushik Rai, local MLA Bijoy Malakar, and other dignitaries.

As the day coincided with Uruka celebrations ahead of Magh Bihu, Sarma avoided making aggressive political remarks during the programme.
