Goalpara MLA A.K. Rashid Alam on Sunday, February 1, sought to calm public concerns surrounding the ongoing Special Revision (SR) controversy, while accusing leaders of the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) of attempting to target genuine voters by misusing the electoral complaint process.
Addressing the media, Rashid Alam alleged that certain BJP and AGP leaders had filed complaints seeking the deletion of bona fide voters’ names from the electoral rolls by allegedly misusing EPIC numbers. He claimed these complaints were submitted without the knowledge or consent of some party workers and were intended to harass ordinary citizens.
The MLA further alleged that a BJP woman worker had filed a complaint seeking the deletion of several voters’ names, including that of his daughter, though the complaint was later withdrawn.
Rashid Alam also accused some BJP–AGP leaders of misleading poor and working-class individuals with false assurances and using them to submit complaints aimed at removing genuine voters from the electoral rolls. He described the practice as a deliberate attempt to intimidate voters.
Emphasising that genuine voters must not be harassed under any circumstances, the MLA warned that legal action would be initiated against BJP and AGP workers found to have filed false or malicious complaints seeking deletion of legitimate names from the voter list.
