Five arrested in Tripura for illegal border crossing, Chennai-bound travel plan foiled

Tripura Police arrested five persons, including three Bangladeshi nationals, in Kailashahar town of Unakoti district on Sunday morning, February 1, for illegally entering India and allegedly attempting to travel to Chennai.

The arrests were made following a tip-off, Kailashahar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar said. A plainclothes police team was keeping watch in the Paiturbazar New Motor Stand area when they noticed suspicious activity involving five individuals preparing to leave in a Maruti van via Dharmanagar in North District.

Police intercepted the vehicle after the occupants reportedly gave inconsistent responses during preliminary questioning. Subsequent interrogation revealed that three of the detainees — Arman Hossain, Imran Hossain and Monir Hossain — are residents of Comilla district in Bangladesh. They allegedly admitted to having crossed the international border illegally to enter India.

The remaining two accused, identified as Faruk Mia and Abdul Qayyum from the Rangauti area, were arrested for allegedly facilitating the illegal entry and arranging onward travel to Chennai.

All five were taken to Kailashahar Police Station for further questioning. The Maruti van used for transportation has been seized. Police officials said the investigation is ongoing to ascertain whether others are linked to the operation. The accused will be produced before a court as per legal procedure.
