Family Alleges Racial Attack in Dehradun Killing of Tripura Student, Demands CBI Inquiry

The family of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura who was killed in Dehradun, has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), alleging that the attack was racially motivated.

Anjel, a resident of Pecharthal in Tripura, died after being fatally assaulted on December 9. His family has maintained that racial prejudice was the motive behind the crime. On Monday, his father, Tarun Kanti Chakma, met Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma in Agartala and formally sought his support in demanding a CBI inquiry.

Tarun Kanti Chakma, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan currently posted in Manipur, said the family has received no significant updates on the investigation even more than a month after Anjel’s death.

“We have been informed that five people have been arrested, but the prime accused is still absconding. My family wants a CBI probe to ensure a fair and speedy investigation,” he said. He also appealed for a posting in Delhi to better pursue the case.

“I have approached the ‘Maharaja’ seeking support in our fight for justice, and he has assured me of all possible assistance,” Chakma added.

Debbarma said he has remained in constant touch with the family since the incident and expressed concern over what he termed serious lapses in the initial investigation.

“Despite the brutal nature of the crime, the police registered an FIR only after three days,” he said. Warning against recurring incidents of racial violence, Debbarma added, “Today a promising 24-year-old has become a victim of racial hatred. Tomorrow, it could be someone else. Justice must be pursued beyond political differences.”

Emphasising inclusivity, the Tipra Motha founder said the country belongs to people of all identities and not only to those who “look alike,” and assured the family of his full support in their pursuit of justice for Anjel Chakma.
