Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has warned that the country is grappling with lawlessness, insecurity, and the persecution of minorities, with mob violence and extremism spreading across the nation. Speaking via an audio message during a media briefing in New Delhi last evening, Hasina described Bangladesh as being “on the edge of an abyss,” navigating one of the most perilous periods in its history.
She urged immediate measures, including restoring democracy through free and fair elections, ending violence and lawlessness, ensuring the proper functioning of civic services, and safeguarding religious minorities, women, girls, and other vulnerable groups.
Hasina also condemned politically motivated actions aimed at intimidating the Bangladesh Awami League and other opposition parties. She called on the United Nations to conduct a new, impartial investigation into the events of the past year. Urging citizens not to lose hope, she emphasized the need for public support to reclaim democracy in Bangladesh.
