EU Leaders to Convene Emergency Summit on January 22

European Union leaders will hold an emergency summit on January 22 to address threats of US tariffs, a spokesperson for the European Commission said. Olof Gill explained that the meeting comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s stated interest in acquiring Greenland and his warning of potential trade measures.

“The EU is engaging with Washington at all levels regarding these tariff threats and is taking all necessary steps to protect its economic interests,” Gill said. He added that the bloc is prepared to respond if tariffs are imposed.

The announcement follows an emergency meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels last Sunday, where discussions focused on the US tariff threat and potential countermeasures. Trump has framed his interest in Greenland as a national security issue and warned that tariffs could follow if no agreement is reached.
