Eight European countries—Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom—have warned that tariff threats could undermine transatlantic relations and trigger a dangerous downward spiral. In a joint statement, the countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic priority and expressed their support for the people of Greenland. As NATO members, they said they stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland.
The statement followed comments by US President Donald Trump, who announced in a social media post on Saturday that Washington would impose a 10 per cent tariff from February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland over the Greenland issue. Trump said the tariff would rise to 25 per cent from the beginning of June unless an agreement is reached for the United States to purchase the territory.
