BREAKING: Centre Advised Manipur Government to Consider Kuki’s Demand to Construct a Ring Road Connecting the Hill Districts

KANGPOKPI: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has urged the Manipur government to examine a proposal for a dedicated road corridor linking the state’s hill areas, following a memorandum submitted by the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), India Today reported.

In an official communication dated August 6, 2025, Joint Director Pausianmuang Tunglut forwarded to the Chief Secretary of Manipur a copy of the August 1 memorandum addressed to the President of India by KIM. The memorandum sought urgent intervention for the construction of the corridor, citing a humanitarian crisis in the hill districts caused by ongoing ethnic violence, economic blockades, and movement restrictions since May 2023.

Describing the road corridor as vital to restoring connectivity between the hill districts and the rest of Manipur, the Kuki Inpi warned that the “lifeline of the Hill Areas” remained severely disrupted.

Meanwhile, in a separate meeting on Friday between the Manipur government and the Foothill Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC), the state refuted allegations of unauthorised road construction in foothill regions.

Officials asserted that no road projects had been sanctioned or executed without due process, and assured that any illegal activities would face legal action after verification. They further clarified that the unauthorised naming of roads or construction on disputed land would not be permitted.
