Reaffirming the Assam government’s commitment to women-led economic empowerment, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, January 12, distributed seed capital of ₹10,000 each to 33,811 women entrepreneurs under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA). The cheque distribution programme was held at the Dokmoka Higher Secondary School Playground under the Howraghat Legislative Assembly Constituency in Karbi Anglong district.
The financial support, extended as a grant-in-aid Entrepreneurship Fund, is aimed at enabling women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to start or expand micro-enterprises. The initiative seeks to strengthen household incomes while fostering sustainable livelihoods at the grassroots level. The beneficiaries, popularly known as “Nari-preneurs,” play a pivotal role in the government’s vision of creating “Lakhpati Baideo”—women earning at least ₹1 lakh annually.
With the latest disbursement, the total number of women beneficiaries under MMUA has reached 18,52,922 across 76 Assembly constituencies, marking significant progress towards the state’s ambitious target of empowering 40 lakh women.
The programme was attended by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Tuliram Ronghang, Lok Sabha MP Amarsing Tisso, local MLA Dorsing Ronghang, Executive Members and MACs of KAAC, along with the District Commissioner, Superintendent of Police of Karbi Anglong, senior party leaders, government officials, and a large number of SHG members.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that women’s economic self-reliance remains a cornerstone of Assam’s development strategy, stating that empowering women strengthens families, communities, and society at large. The event echoed the government’s guiding principle of “Empowering Women, Empowering Society.”
MMUA, a flagship initiative of the Assam government, focuses on financial inclusion, entrepreneurship development, and income generation for women at the village level, making it one of the largest women-centric livelihood programmes in the state.
The Chief Minister is scheduled to continue MMUA cheque distribution programmes in Karbi Anglong district on January 14, with upcoming events planned in the Baithalangso and Diphu Legislative Assembly Constituencies.
