BJP’s double-engine model will derail with Himanta at the helm, claims Bhupesh Baghel

Senior Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on January 20 claimed that the BJP’s “double-engine government” in Assam would end in the upcoming Assembly elections, alleging corruption and misuse of power by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Baghel accused Sarma of cronyism and “gundagiri,” citing a sharp rise in his declared assets over the years, and said the Congress and other like-minded opposition parties would contest the polls unitedly.

Baghel also recalled Sarma’s past association with the Congress and alleged that he was being protected by the BJP despite corruption charges. Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi said the party was working to build a broad opposition coalition to unseat the BJP-led government, alleging confusion and tensions within the ruling alliance. Congress leaders further accused the Centre of authoritarianism and reiterated their commitment to a “Nava Assam” vision ahead of the elections.
