A troubling incident involving an alleged unprovoked attack on a student from Assam has been reported at the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU), reigniting concerns over student safety, hostel security, and potential regional discrimination on university campuses.
According to a close friend of the victim, Hiros Jyoti Das, a student from Balipara in Tezpur, Assam, was allegedly assaulted in the early hours at the Guru Govind Boys’ Hostel. The incident reportedly occurred around 4:00 a.m. when Das stepped out of his room to use the washroom.
Sources say Das was stopped by a group of individuals who questioned his identity and origin, asking, “Kaha se ho?” (Where are you from?). Upon learning he was from Assam, the group allegedly launched a violent attack without provocation.
Das sustained serious injuries in the assault and was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The friend who reported the incident expressed grave concern, describing it as a targeted, identity-based attack. Allegations have also surfaced that university authorities have not responded promptly or with the seriousness the situation demands.
The incident has intensified broader concerns regarding the safety of students from the Northeast, particularly within hostel premises, and has raised questions about the effectiveness of institutional grievance mechanisms.
Students and well-wishers have called for a thorough investigation, strengthened campus security, and decisive action against those responsible.
