Assam: Kokrajhar Shuts Down Following Alleged Assault on Mentally Challenged Woman

Kokrajhar (Assam): Life in Assam’s Kokrajhar district came to a standstill on Sunday as markets and businesses remained closed and public transport largely suspended during a shutdown called to protest the alleged rape of a mentally challenged woman. The bandh was organized by the World Hindu Federation.

To prevent any escalation, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

The incident reportedly took place on Saturday in the Patharghat area. Police have arrested the accused, a resident of Dhubri district. Additional security personnel were deployed across sensitive locations in Kokrajhar to maintain law and order.

Authorities urged residents to remain calm and warned against spreading rumours, emphasizing that strict legal action would be taken against anyone circulating false information. Citizens were encouraged to report misleading content to the district control room.

District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty and Senior Superintendent of Police Akshat Garg held a peace meeting with representatives of political parties, social organisations, student bodies, and local citizens to prevent the situation from worsening. Chakravarty stated that the administration is closely monitoring developments and has taken all necessary measures to maintain peace and public safety.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case and ensure justice through proper legal channels. Additionally, the administration has begun identifying vulnerable areas for installing CCTV cameras and improving street lighting as preventive measures.

Appealing for unity, the district commissioner urged all communities to trust democratic institutions and work together to maintain peace and foster development in Kokrajhar, which is home to diverse populations.
