Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam must be seen as central to the Northeast’s shared economic future, noting that investments in the state benefit the entire region due to strong linkages in geography, talent, and infrastructure. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said major projects like the proposed Tata semiconductor unit, though located in Assam, will generate economic gains across all Northeastern states.
Sarma described Guwahati as the gateway to the Northeast, attracting regional talent and supporting large-scale industries due to Assam’s plains and land availability. He said interest in the semiconductor sector is growing after Tata’s entry, with meetings planned with industry leaders to build momentum.
On tourism, he said Assam has received several investment offers for hotels and homestays, with MoUs for five-star hotels in Guwahati and Kaziranga to be signed after his return. Referring to the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, Sarma said investments worth nearly Rs 3 lakh crore have already been grounded out of Rs 5 lakh crore in signed MoUs.
He added that Assam is focusing on green and new energy, with MoUs worth about Rs 1 lakh crore expected in areas such as pumped storage and bamboo-to-methanol projects. Calling Assam’s Davos participation a milestone, Sarma said RBI data shows Assam is India’s fastest-growing state, positioning it as an emerging and competitive investment destination.
