Amit Shah scheduled to visit Dibrugarh on January 30 for foundation-laying of second Assam Assembly complex

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Dibrugarh on January 30 to lay the foundation stone for Assam’s second Legislative Assembly complex and formally mark the completion of the first phase of the Khanikar Stadium redevelopment, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.

The Chief Minister made the announcement during a Facebook Live interaction, describing the proposed Assembly complex as a key step in developing Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital. He said that once the complex becomes operational, two sessions of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be held in Dibrugarh each year, while the remaining two sessions will continue to take place in Guwahati.

Dr Sarma said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to decentralising governance and strengthening the administrative role of Upper Assam.

During his visit, the Union Home Minister will also inaugurate the completion of the first phase of the Khanikar Stadium redevelopment project. The upgraded facility is being developed into a modern venue capable of hosting major sporting events as well as large public programmes.

The Chief Minister said the stadium’s seating capacity will increase from about 5,000 to nearly 35,000 after completion, making it the largest multi-sports stadium in Assam. The project is expected to provide a significant boost to sports infrastructure and further enhance Dibrugarh’s status as an important administrative and infrastructural centre.

The January 30 visit is being viewed as a major milestone for Dibrugarh, highlighting the state government’s focus on balanced regional development and long-term infrastructure growth.
