Reacting to a recent remark by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) General Secretary and MLA Rafiqul Islam on Saturday, January 10, reiterated the constitutional right to personal freedom, particularly regarding individual choice and attire.
Addressing the media, Islam said the Indian Constitution guarantees every citizen the freedom to dress according to personal comfort, belief, and conviction, without fear of discrimination or coercion. He noted that freedom of expression also encompasses clothing choices and must be upheld in a democratic society.
“India is a free country, and the Constitution clearly ensures every individual the liberty to wear what they choose,” Islam said. “Just as a woman may wear a short dress if she is comfortable, others may choose to wear a hijab based on their faith or personal beliefs. Both choices deserve equal respect.”
Islam further cautioned against politicising issues related to attire or using them to target specific communities. He stressed the need to uphold constitutional values, promote mutual respect, and ensure inclusivity in public discourse.
