Former Chief Minister says law and order has stabilised; awaits BJP’s central decision on government formation
Imphal: After an unsuccessful attempt to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Tuesday claimed that the imposition of President’s Rule has helped improve the law and order situation in the strife-torn state.
Speaking to reporters at Imphal Airport upon his return from the national capital—where he and 25 BJP MLAs had camped for over a week—Singh said that peace and normalcy have gradually returned under central administration. “Since the imposition of President’s Rule, the law and order situation has improved significantly. The Centre has been apprised of the people’s sentiments, and steps have been taken to restore confidence,” he said.
Biren Singh admitted that despite their efforts, his delegation could not secure appointments with the Prime Minister or the Home Minister. However, he maintained that all concerns—ranging from the condition of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to the demand for a popular government—were communicated to the central leadership through proper channels. “We have placed before the Centre the views of the people. Whatever decision is to be made will be made at the national level,” he stated.
Responding to questions on government formation, the former Chief Minister reiterated that the matter rests entirely with the BJP’s national leadership. “BJP is a national party, not a regional one. Decisions cannot be taken here in Imphal; they have to come from the higher-ups,” Singh said, calling for unity and patience among party legislators.
The former CM also pointed out that Manipur has come under President’s Rule 11 times in the past, including during periods of majority governments, and argued that the current intervention has brought temporary stability. “It’s true that the situation is better now. The Centre’s intervention has helped maintain law and order,” he said.
Taking aim at the Congress, Singh accused the opposition of double standards. “Earlier, they demanded the ouster of the government. Now, they want the Assembly dissolved. We will not dance to their tune. We will act according to the people’s will,” he asserted.
President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur in February 2025, following Biren Singh’s resignation amid mounting criticism over his government’s handling of the prolonged ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The conflict, which erupted in May 2023, has claimed more than 260 lives and displaced thousands.
Biren Singh’s latest remarks come amid growing speculation over whether the BJP will push for an early return to an elected government in Manipur or continue with central rule until lasting stability is ensured.
