The New Bongaigaon Government Railway Police (GRP) thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis on January 18. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, GRP personnel carried out a targeted operation on board the Brahmaputra Mail Express, a long-distance train commonly used for inter-state travel.
During the operation, the police recovered approximately 25 kilograms of cannabis, suspected to have been meant for illegal distribution. One person was arrested in connection with the case. The accused has been identified as Sudhir Kumar, a resident of Bihar, who was taken into custody at the spot and subsequently handed over for further legal proceedings.
Officials described the seizure as a major success in efforts to curb narcotics trafficking through railway networks, which have increasingly drawn the attention of law enforcement agencies.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act by the New Bongaigaon GRP. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband and determine possible links to a larger inter-state drug trafficking network.
