10,000 artistes rehearse as Assam readies historic Bagurumba dance for world record Short and crisp

Preparations are underway for one of Assam’s most ambitious cultural events, as nearly 10,000 artistes gear up to perform the traditional Bodo dance, Bagurumba, at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati on January 17. A three-day statewide rehearsal programme is currently in progress to ensure seamless coordination for the historic mass performance, which is aimed at setting a world record.

Artistes from different districts are undergoing intensive training, with large-scale rehearsals being held at multiple venues. From the Boko–Chhaygaon and Palashbari Assembly constituencies alone, 545 dancers are expected to take part. At practice grounds such as Gandhi Maidan in Boko, performers can be seen rehearsing in perfect synchrony, refining the graceful, rhythmic movements of Bagurumba—popularly known as the “butterfly dance” of the Bodo community.

The mega event is set to become a landmark in Assam’s cultural calendar, symbolising unity, discipline and collective pride. By bringing together dancers from diverse regions, the programme aims to highlight the richness, continuity and vibrancy of Bodo traditions on an unprecedented scale.

Adding to the occasion’s significance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event, giving national prominence to the cultural showcase. Organisers believe the mass Bagurumba performance will not only earn a place in global record books but also reaffirm the cultural identity and heritage of the Bodo people through their centuries-old dance form.
